Everything you need to know about exploring Tramore Backstrand and our guided coastal experiences
Not at all. The boardwalk at Tramore Backstrand is specifically designed for accessible walking, with flat, firm surfaces that are easy on the joints. We regularly guide pensioners of varying fitness levels, and you can walk at your own pace. If you need a break, there are plenty of spots to rest and take in the views.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (August–October) are peak times when migratory species pass through the salt marshes. You'll see waders, terns, and wildfowl that don't stick around in summer or winter. Winter's quieter but brilliant for spotting overwintering geese and ducks if you don't mind the cold.
You're welcome to bring your own, but we've got a few spare pairs available if you ask when you book. The bird hide has a spotting scope set up year-round, so you can get close-up views without needing your own gear. Just bring comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
Most of our guided boardwalk experiences run between 90 minutes and 2.5 hours, depending on the route and how much time you want to spend at the bird hide. We build in stops to chat about the habitat and what we're seeing, so it's not a race. We're happy to adjust the pace to suit the group.
The main boardwalk is wheelchair-friendly with smooth, even surfaces and gentle gradients. The bird hide itself has level access. If you're using a walking aid or have specific mobility concerns, just let us know when you book so we can make sure everything's sorted for you. Parking's close by too.
We run in light rain and wind—it's Ireland, after all—but we'll reschedule if conditions are unsafe (heavy storms, severe flooding). You'll get a heads-up from us the day before if we're concerned. A waterproof jacket and good shoes are your best friends out there.
